Terry Collins: Genius At Work

Final Score: Mets 7, Nationals 5

The Mets had a 7-5 lead entering the 9th inning last night with Jeurys Familia coming in to try and close it out. Of course Familia loaded the bases. With one out and Bryce Harper coming up, Terry Collins yanked his closer in favor of subpar chunky lefty Josh Edgin.

Terry Collins decided to go with the lefty on lefty matchup even though Bryce Harper crushes every type of pitcher and Jeurys Familia is our ace out of the pen. But somehow Terry’s plan worked. Harper hit the ball right back to Edgin for a 1-2-3 double play.

I’m not even going to question Terry’s insane decision making on this night. The Mets won a game they desperately needed to win, and that’s all that matters.

Travis The Great: Travis d’Arnaud was the MVP last night hitting a two-run homer in the second inning and a three-run shot in the fourth. Somehow with everyone going down due to injury d’Arnaud has found a way to stay on the field. I feel like he has sucked the life force out of the rest of the team in order to preserve his own fragile body.

Need Jacob: Jacob deGrom outpitched Max Scherzer. He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits over 7 innings and struck out 12. Terry put him on the mound for the 7th inning despite having over 100 pitches, and I’m totally in favor of the move. We need our aces to pitch seven innings. The pen just can’t be trusted.

Nats Poo Pen: Speaking of bullpens that can’t be trusted, the Nationals pen imploded in the 8th inning. Jose Reyes doubled, T.J. Rivera reached on an error by Ryan Zimmerman, and Travis d’Arnaud was walked to load the bases. Then the Nats gave up an RBI single up the middle to Kevin Plawecki. I didn’t even realize he was still on the roster. Then they walked Michael Conforto and forced in the seventh run.

Seriously Zimmerman?: What the hell is going on with Ryan Zimmerman? The guy hasn’t done a damn thing since 2013. I thought him and David Wright were heading down the same road to early retirement. Last night Zimmerman hit a solo bomb in the second inning and a two run jack in the 8th inning off Addison Reed. He hit his 9th and 10th home runs of the season in April?!? If the Nationals have Daniel Murphy, Bryce Harper AND Ryan Zimmerman competing for the MVP the NL East “race” is already over.

Today: Zack Wheeler faces Steven Strasburg this afternoon. Tomorrow Noah Syndergaard is supposedly pitching. He said yesterday the Mets asked him to get an MRI, and he refused. Lol. On the one hand, it’s smart to do the opposite of whatever the Mets training staff tells you to do. So I respect his choice from that perspective. On the other hand, his bicep was aching, and he said he couldn’t lift his arm this week. I’m sure it will all work out of great.

Mets Continue To Play Garbage Baseball

Final Score: Nationals 3, Mets 1

The Mets have lost three games in a row and 7 of their last 8. They’ve dropped 4 of their first 6 series of the season.

I want to be optimistic about the 2017 Mets. Then I remember they had two good months in 2016 (April and September), and the rest of the season was filled with mediocre garbage baseball. Right now the Mets are playing the same garbage ball we suffered through last May to August.

Garbage baseball teams don’t deserve well thought out game recaps. This crappy squad gets a bulleted list of stray observations:

  • Jacob deGrom was throwing gas but was inconsistent over 5.2 innings. He walked 6 while striking out 10. He gave up 3 runs on 8 hits.
  • The offense managed one run on two hits.
  • That’s it. There’s nothing else to talk about.

Dump Jose For New Phenom: The Mets won’t acknowledge this publicly in April, but they have to be thinking about releasing Jose Reyes and promoting top prospect Amed Rosario from Triple-A. Rosario is hitting like .350+ in Vegas (along with every other hitter on the team), but he’s definitely closer to his major league debut than we originally anticipated. And it’s not like we’re talking about a prospect that’s highly ranked on a team with a weak farm system. We’re talking about a prospect that Keith Law ranked as the BEST IN BASEBALL. Rosario has star potential, and I’m ready to see him and Michael Conforto in the same lineup.

DL Him: Can we put Yoenis Cespedes on the DL already? No? I guess we’ll just wait for Terry to start him on Tuesday against Atlanta and watch him pull up lame trying to run out a routine infield ground out.

Today: Max Scherzer toes the rubber for the Nationals as they look for the sweep on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. Nothing like some April embarrassment on a national stage.

Terry Ruins Night, Kills Salas

Final Score: Marlins 5, Mets 4

The Mets had a dominant Jacob deGrom on the mound striking out one Marlins hitter after another. In the 7th and 8th inning the offense finally picked up our co-ace and gave deGrom a 4-2 lead. And…Terry managed to blow the goddamn game.

Terry’s A Moron: DeGrom struck out 13 Marlins over 7 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits. He had 97 pitches after the 7th inning. Terry had a choice. He could have sent his dominant stud starting pitcher back to the mound to see if he could retire a few more hitters before creeping too far above 100 pitches. Or he could have turned to his extremely overworked bullpen. Terry decided to turn to the overworked bullpen and specifically he turned to Fernando Salas who has seemingly been used in every game this season. Salas coughed up the game by giving up back to back homers to Christian Yelich and Giancarlo Stanton. Salas is dead. Terry killed him two weeks into the season.

Dead Pen: After the game when asked why he didn’t stick with deGrom, Terry had the balls to say he didn’t want to put his young starter’s arm at risk this early in the season. Meanwhile Salas’ arm is buried, Hansel Robles has his shriveled arm soaking in formaldehyde, and Jerry Blevins is going from situational lefty to a lefty used in every situation. At this rate Jerry’s going to wish his arm was broken again to avoid the Terry bullpen torture treatment.

Brutal Loss: This was a brutal loss to a divisional foe. Not only did we lose our chance to win this road series, but we’ll be lucky to split the series on Sunday. We all know these Terry losses add up over the course of the season, but they also take a huge emotional toll on the fans and on the players.

The Marlins Mets’d Us: The Marlins gave the Mets the home run treatment in this game. Justin Bour and Marcell Ozuna hit solo homers off deGrom. Christian Yelich hit the two run blast off Salas and Stanton hit a solo shot.

Walkyear: Neil Walker had a nice game with two hits and an RBI on his double in the first inning.

Picked Up Jake: I wish I could be excited about the 7th inning that our offense had, but Terry took the wind out of my sails. Neil Walker executed a smart bunt single to leadoff the inning against Adam Conley. Then Curtis Granderson tripled to right field which tied the game. Yelich almost caught the ball. Then Mattingly yanked Conley who always looks like goddamn Cy Young against the Mets. Michael Conforto followed that with a sac fly (nearly a home run) to give the Mets the lead (3-2). Asdrubal Cabrera also added a solo blast in the 8th inning (4-2). It was all for naught.

Tomorrow: Let’s hope the Mets split the series. Hopefully Matt Harvey continues his rise from the dead on Easter Sunday.

Bruce Launches Payback Moonshot

Final Score: Mets 4, Phillies 3

Based on how the game started, I never thought it would wind up being a feel good night that ended with a pimped out payback homer. DeGrom didn’t have his best command and looked especially shaky in the first inning. But he went full veteran ace mode and settled down to give the club 6 solid innings.

The mook in the Phillies bullpen who gave up the Asdrubal Cabrera bat flip walkoff homer last September decided to throw at Cabby’s head in the 8th inning of a tie game in April. Then Jay Bruce went full payback hero mode and launched a two-run moonshot to give the Mets a 4-2 lead that they would never surrender. (The bad news is the Mets only managed to scrape together four hits against the lowly Phillies and the team defense looked terrible again but let’s ignore that).

DeGrizzled Veteran: Jacob deGrom pitched 6 innings, gave up 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. He only struck out 3 hitters. Mediocre defense in the first inning helped the Phillies score their first run. After a leadoff walk and a force out at second base, Jose Reyes failed to catch an Odubel Herrera pop up behind third base. That set up runners on first and second for Maikel Franco who “singled” on a ball lined up the middle that Curtis Granderson should have been able to play in center field but instead deflected to right field. That loaded the bases for Michael Saunders who drove in the first run with a single and then deGrom walked Cameron Rupp to force in a run. It was 2-0 after the first inning but deGrom settled down.

Big Bruce Ball 1.0: Jay Bruce hit a solo homer in the top of the 4th inning to cut the Phillies lead in half. I love how Jay was public enemy number one all offseason simply by virtue of existing, and now he’s the only guy hitting to start the season. It’s so scripted.

Phillie Blessings: In the top of the 7th inning Jay “Middle of the Action” Bruce walked to leadoff the inning. Then Curtis Granderson hit a ball up the middle fielded by the second baseman who made an errant throw to first base. The error allowed Bruce to advance to third and set up first and third for Neil Walker. Neil hit a sac fly to even the score at 2.

The Old Switcheroo: For some reason in the 7th inning with runners on first and second and two outs, Terry had Michael Conforto on deck to pinch hit for Jacob deGrom but then pulled him in favor of Wilmer Flores against a righty. Wilmer flew out to center. Terry really hates playing Conforto.

Ridiculous Play: In the bottom of the 7th inning, Jerry Blevins came in to replace Josh Smoker who retired the first two batters but then gave up a single and walked a guy. Jerry proceeded to throw a pitch that bounced way out of the strike zone to Odubel Herrera. It was so far out of the zone that the baserunners thought it was going to the backstop. Travis d’Arnaud somehow fielded the ball, threw wildly to second base in an attempt to catch the runner off the base, Cabrera dove and fielded the wild throw, and then he threw to first base and was able to nail the runner at first for the final out of the inning. Thanks to the Phillies for running themselves out of an inning.

BatflipGate Payback
: With one out in the 8th inning, Edubray Ramos sailed a ball over the head of Asdrubal Cabrera as payback for Cabrera’s incredible September 2016 bat flip. The Philly Manager was tossed. Talk about a bonehead move by the reliever late in a tie game. I recently saw an interview with Philly manager Pete Mackanin, and he said he was trying to teach this young Philly squad how to play the game right. This is definitely a teaching moment. Also, Cabrera said after the game he had no idea who the reliever was and why he threw at him. I LOVE when players pretend they have no idea who a guy is as a way to insult them.

Big Bruce Ball 2.0: Once the heat died down after BatflipGate, Jay Bruce launched a two out 1-2 pitch from a lefty reliever into the right field second deck for the ultimate payback bomb. That gave the Mets a 4-2 lead, and it was enough for the victory. Addison Reed gave up a solo blast in the 9th inning but ultimately he sealed the deal.

Bench Jose Please: Jose Reyes is basically batting zero in like 40 at-bats. Terry needs to get him out of the leadoff spot and find a way to give Wilmer Flores and T.J. Rivera some playing time. Jose is not a star like Yoenis Cespedes who gets playing time to work his way out of a slump. Jose is a utility player at this point. If he stinks, he sits. It ain’t hard.

Play Conforto: Grandy blew a play in center in the first inning of this game. Statcast said it was a play made by center fielders 75% of the time. This is just another pointless reminder for Terry to rotate his old outfielders and get Conforto into a game.

Juanny No Bats: Juan Lagares is due back from the DL soon. Maybe even this weekend. The outfield defense has been so bad that Terry is going to wind up playing Juanny no bats. I’m sure that’ll boost the offense.

Today: Matt Harvey takes on Clay Buchholz. Clay is one of the the worst pitchers in baseball. We must crush him. Hopefully the Dark Knight continues to show positive signs on the mound as he recovers from his surgery.

Mets Lose Snoozer In Extras On Bartolo Reunion Night

Final Score (in 12 innings): Braves 3, Mets 1

In hindsight the Mets probably should have pushed MLB to make that extra innings rule change where they automatically put a man on second base at the start of the 10th inning (and every inning thereafter). At least we would have had some baserunners to leave in scoring position.

Bartolo reunion night was an early season reminder that our offense can be feast or famine. The Mets only managed five damn hits for the entire game. It was a reminder that our pitchers often get stuck with no decisions when they fire strong starts. It was a reminder that we let the dependable Colon walk and replaced him with Montero who ultimately blew the game in extras. It all sucked. That being said, it’s game two of the season so I’m already over it.

Big Sexy Reunion Night: Bartolo Colon went 6 innings and gave up 2 hits. The only run he gave up was a Bruce dinger. He looked like classic Tolo as he gobbled innings and gave Atlanta a quality start. Yesterday was “The Mets were smart to not re-sign Bartolo Colon” day in mainstream media land. What a hot garbage take.

DeGrom Looking Great: Jacob deGrom looked fantastic. He fired 6 scoreless innings, gave up just 2 hits, and topped out at 97 MPH. He had nothing to show for it in the end. Same game, different season.

Up The Middle D: Neil Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera made some great plays in the field including some key double plays in a number of big spots.

First Mets Homer: Jay Bruce hit the first Mets homer of 2017 off of Bartolo in the 5th inning. Everyone spent the entire offseason ripping Bruce apart, so I feel like the 2017 script called for this moment. I hope he cranks 50 bombs and flips everyone off all season long.

Rusty Reyes: Jose Reyes had a horrible game. He sucked on defense and also went 0 for 5 with 2 Ks. He failed to field a fairly routine grounder in 6th inning. He made a horrendous error in the 8th inning to allow the leadoff man Dansby Swanson to reach base. Jose got lucky that inning because Freddie Freeman hit into a double play.

Bruce Doesn’t Pass Eye Test: The old guard often talks about things like “the eye test” when defending position players that seem competent in the field but grade poorly with advanced defensive metrics. I can tell you right now, Jay Bruce doesn’t even pass the eye test. He stinks in right field. In the 7th inning Hansel Robles came in to pitch and Nick Markakis hit a one out triple to right field. That triple was the second ball hit to Jay Bruce this series that shouldn’t have been a triple. Bruce took forever to play it and made a weak throw to the cut off man. Then with runners on first and second, Adonis Garcia hit a ball to right that went over ‬Jay Bruce’s head and turned into an RBI double. A good right fielder catches the ball. No doubt about it.

Classic Robles Meltdown: Robles came in to pitch the 7th and had a classic Robles meltdown. Let’s pretend Robles’ stinkiness is a new thing and blame the World Baseball Classic.

Robo-Walk: In the 8th inning after the Freeman double play, Matt Kemp doubled and Fernando Salas issued the first automatic robo-intentional walk of the Mets season to Nick Markakis. Then he had a huge K of Brandon Phillips to end the 8th inning. If Salas has one more decent appearance in the 8th inning Terry will crown him the setup guy and proceed to use him everyday for two months until his elbow melts off.

Extra Innings, Extra Boring: The Mets had one chance to score in extras. In the 10th inning Bruce doubled and the Braves robo-walked Lucas Duda. Then Travis d’Arnaud and Ty Kelly (aka Ty Smelly) had pathetic back to back strikeouts.

That was really all she wrote. Rafael Montero walked the leadoff man in the 11th because he stinks, but then he squirmed out of trouble with a double play. In the 12th Montero officially blew it. He gave up a two out, two run double to Matt Kemp.

Juan Ain’t Coming Back: The Mets said yesterday that the return of Juan Lagares from the DL has been delayed by at least a week. Surprise! The Mets signed former Rays OF Desmond Jennings as Triple-A depth. He’s a right-handed hitting outfielder, and we needed one so the signing works for me.

Sniff The Pitching: Sandy Alderson said the Mets will be “sniffing around” the pitching market. The pitching market is made up of guys like Colby Lewis and Jon Niese so it probably smells like washed up crap.

Today: Matt Harvey vs. Jaime Garcia tonight. Let’s see if the Dark Knight looks healthy. Hopefully Wilmer plays against the lefty and the Mets launch some long balls.

Matz Tender, Harvey Looks Better

The baseball gods giveth, and the baseball gods taketh away.

This morning we hear that the curse of Team Tender strikes again. Steven Matz has been sidelined with a tender elbow. What else is new? This is just a reminder that Steven Matz’s endless battle with arm tenderness will continue to be a thing this season.

The Mets say he’ll miss a start, and then they will re-evaluate the situation.

Translation: The Mets will force him to pitch through pain just like they did last season. Pray for Matz.

Then during today’s Grapefruit League game we see Matt Harvey step on the mound and pitch a nice game. His fastball had some life, he was able to locate his slider, and he was efficient over 6 innings. Sure he only faced a few of the Braves’ regular players, but it was nice to see a solid outing from Harvey especially considering the Matz news.

The Mets pitching situation is really precarious in my opinion. On the surface it looks like they have depth. The “experts” all talk about how the Mets rotation is stacked with Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz, Zack Wheeler, Robert Gsellman, and Seth Lugo. Seven pitchers for five spots! Wow. But in reality the Mets could wind up short-handed in no time at all. First of all, teams normally use seven or more starting pitchers during the season. Realistically teams use more like 10 starters over the course of the year.

If the Mets are able to get close to 200 innings from at least three of these starting pitchers the team should be in great shape. But is that realistic? None of the seven pitchers I mentioned above have ever tossed 200 innings. Not one of them. They’ve all had serious arm injuries. Most of them have had arm surgeries. Right now I’m penciling in Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom as our horses. And they aren’t guaranteed locks to be healthy. I’m afraid to rely on Matt Harvey for anything. His thoracic outlet surgery was a serious, career threatening procedure, and it’s not really fair to expect him to return to his 2015 form this season or in the future.

Have you noticed that the Mets are really hyping up Rafael Montero this spring? They love what they are seeing from him. I think in reality the organization is starting to realize what could happen if Team Tender turns into Team DL, and we’re left with Rafael Montero making meaningful starts during the season. They’re preemptively giving Montero a vote of confidence because they can see how close he is to cracking the rotation depth chart.

Just cross your fingers and light your candles for Thor and deGrom. If they can stay healthy we should be able to piece together the rest of the innings from the other starting pitchers. If we are fortunate enough to get a solid full season from one of the other guys (Harvey, Matz, Wheeler, Gsellman, or Lugo) the rotation should be in great shape.

If not, Sandy will likely be left frantically searching for a contingency plan like Montero or worse…Jon Niese.

Cancel The Resurrection; DeGrom’s Done

God hates the Mets. He just does. Jacob deGrom went from planning to resurrect his season on Sunday to officially sticking a fork in his 2016 campaign. DeGrom season ending elbow injury news on Jacob deGrom wig day at Citi Field epitomizes what being a Mets fan is about. It’s as Mets as it gets.

The Mets love mishandling everything. Fire Ray Ramirez! Fire the entire medical staff! Fire Wilpon! Fire everyone! He apparently felt some pain in his ulnar nerve while throwing a ball around in the outfield and needs surgery that will sideline him for three months. But it is NOT surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament (i.e. Tommy John surgery). This surgery involves the doctors moving the nerve or something to stop irritation. Whatever. It sounds horrible.

2016 ain’t our year folks. All the young pitchers are toast. Pray that one day we have a chance to see Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler take the mound on consecutive days. At the moment it seems more likely that we’ll be seeing Bartolo Colon pitching at 50 years old as his 20 illegitimate children watch from the bleachers.

Just shutdown Matz. Pray for Thor. Jesus Christ pray for Thor.

Still Can’t Beat The Nats

Final Score: Nationals 4, Mets 1

We always knew it would come down to beating Washington. If we wanted to take the NL East we needed to beat the Nationals. 2016 wasn’t going to be like 2015 where they handed us the NL East. We were going to have to take it. Well that ship sailed shortly after the All-Star Break when we decided to play like crap for 3 months. But even if the Mets want to keep pace in the Wild Card race (still 2 games out), they are going to need to show some life in this series and the one in Washington starting on September 12th. In last night’s loss Thor was great and the Mets offense did absolutely nothing. We ain’t off to a good start.

The Last Hope: Noah Syndergaard is literally the last young ace standing. He pitched great. He went 7 innings and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits. He only struck out 4 because he’s clearly revamped his first half blow em’ away style. Now with these elbow spurs he’s clearly being a bit more conservative in the velocity department. Anyway we wasted Thor’s fantastic start. Flushed it down the old toilet.

He’s So Hot And…He’s Dead: Remember when Neil Walker was the hottest hitter on the team and launching home runs and then he said his back was sore and 12 hours later he was out for the season? Well bum knee Asdrubal Cabrera is the hottest hitter on the planet. He hit his 19th homer in this game giving the Mets their only run. Pray for Cabby. We can’t afford to lose him.

Some Chances: Curtis Granderson came up with two men on and one out in the 4th inning and popped out to the third baseman. In the 7th inning Jose Reyes came up with two men on and two outs and struck out. Other than that A.J. Cole and the Nationals pen shut the Mets down.

Silly Terry: Terry used Fernando Salas (which autocorrects on my phone to Fernando Salad) in the 8th inning which worked out great. He pitched a scoreless inning. But for some reason in a 2-1 ballgame Terry didn’t go to Addison Reed or Jeurys Familia in the 9th. He’s overused both of them all season, but last night’s game didn’t feel like the right spot to him? Well in the 9th inning Jerry Blevins and Hansel Robles combined to give up 2 more insurance runs which made the game 4-1 and put it out of reach.

Forget About Playoffs: Jacob deGrom apparently went for a precautionary MRI and the results showed no structural damage but inflammation in his pitching elbow. He’s supposedly missing his next start. But in reality Jacob and Steven Matz are completely out. This idea that we are trying to win a World Series and accomplish what we failed to do last year is out the window. I still can’t believe we had a run of solid health last August/September. I wonder if that will ever happen again.

Young Guns Season 2: It’s all up to the young arms. Robert Gsellman, Seth Lugo, Rafael Montero and Gabriel Ynoa are going to get the chance to audition for next year’s team. Also as a side note I realized R.A. Dickey is a free agent at the end of the season. Imagine we go from the dream of 5 young aces to a rotation headlined by Bartolo Colon and Dickey in 2017.

Today: Robert Gsellman vs. Tanner Roark tonight. I have Roark in fantasy. I hope we score 50 runs off of him. But a complete game shutout seems more likely.

DeGrom’s Not Right

Final Score: Marlins 6, Mets 4

For the third straight outing Jacob deGrom didn’t have his best stuff or his command. The Mets also rested Yoenis Cespedes and Asdrubal Cabrera in this series finale. So they essentially conceded the game. The Mets may have won 3 out of 4 against the Marlins, but as I said yesterday another poor deGrom start is cause for concern.

DeGrumpy: Jacob struggled to get through 5 innings. He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks. That ain’t the Jake we all know and love. He waved for the trainer when he departed the game. Obviously the fans freaked out but he said after the game he was healthy. He said his problems were mechanical. That’s what Matt Harvey said for months.

The Bruce Is Loose?: With the Marlins up 3-0 in the 6th inning, Jay Bruce smashed a solo homer. Bruce is slowly starting to come out of his funk. He’s really exactly like Lucas Duda. He gets pull happy and looks lost at the plate for long stretches. Then he gets a couple of opposite field knocks. Before long he’s mashing dingers again.

Smoker For Two?: So Terry brought in Josh Smoker in the 6th inning and he pitched a 1-2-3 inning with 2 Ks. But then he brought him out for the 7th inning, and he was crushed. He gave up a single to Ichiro Suzuki, a walk to Martin Prado, and a three-run shot to Christian Yelich to make it 6-1 Marlins. Terry saw that Smoker throws 95+, and he’s overusing him like crazy. Back to back to back days and multi-inning appearances. The guy is a regular one inning type of late inning reliever Terry. Don’t kill him/put him in a position to fail.

Filling Stanton’s Shoes: Speaking of Christian Yelich, he really played the role of Giancarlo Stanton Metkiller in this series. And we were more than willing to let him beat us. At least all his hits and homers only equated to one Marlins win.

The Lost Inning: In the 8th inning, Curtis Granderson doubled, Kelly Johnson singled, and then Jay Bruce hit an opposite field single to score Grandy and make it 6-2. The Mets had a rally cooking. Then the Marlins made a pitching change and brought in Kyle Barraclough. He promptly walked Wilmer Flores to load the bases with nobody out. Michael Conforto came up and hit a ball right in front of home plate. The catcher stepped on home for one out and then threw Conforto out at first for the double play. It was the worst thing he could have done. Then the Mets pinch hit Cespedes with runners on second and third and he struck out. I suppose the Mets could have brought Yo in to pinch hit for Conforto with the bases loaded. But they both blew it. Whatever.

Out Of Position: Right after Yo pinch hit for James Loney, Terry brought in Rene Rivera to play first base. So we expand the rosters and now we have guys playing out of position? Right. Makes sense. Great roster management Terry.

Cabby So Hot Right Now: Asdrubal Cabrera pinch hit in the 9th inning and launched a two run homer to make it 6-4 Marlins. The Mets couldn’t spark a rally after that homer though, and they lost. Cabrera needs that knee to magically heal ASAP. He’s so hot he could hit a homer in his sleep right now.

Video Tribute: If the Mets fire Ray Ramirez at the end of the season I hope they give him a video tribute with all his best injury moments set to the song “O Fortuna”.

Stinko d’Arnaud: Has anyone figured out why Travis d’Arnaud stinks this year? Is he just hiding an injury? Is there a running theory?

Today: Well in the end it still comes down to beating the Nationals. Noah Syndergaard pitches tonight. The Mets must stay in the WC race and win 2 of 3. Let’s go Mets.

DeGrom Had Nothing; Pray For Fluke Win Tonight

Final Score: Cardinals 8, Mets 1
Jacob deGrom and the Mets were destroyed last night. The Cardinals should have won last night’s game 15-1. They had 19 hits. They crushed deGrom to the tune of 5 runs on 12 hits over 4.2 innings. Jacob was unable to locate, gave up 3 long balls, and has struggled now for two straight starts. Commissioner Erik Goeddel was tattooed and so was dead arm Hansel Robles. Goeddel was demoted after the game. The Mets hardly threatened offensively with only 4 hits and 1 run. Carlos Martinez pitched a brilliant and efficient ballgame going 8 innings on 97 pitches. The Mets certainly never had a chance to score enough runs to make up for the poor performance by their pitching staff.

Pretender Reminder: Last night’s game was just the 2016 Mets friendly pretender reminder that I mentioned a couple of days ago. They show a little life, and then they fall flat on their face. Classic!

deAd Arm or deStroyed Arm?: Jacob deGrom’s outing was concerning I guess. The NY Post said the young Mets pitchers need to learn to locate consistently. Ummmm deGrom has a 2.71 career ERA and 2.96 on the season. The guy won three playoff games last season. He may have failed to locate last night, but I’m pretty sure he’s had some success locating his pitches in the past. So what’s the real issue? Is he hitting a wall right now? A little case of dead arm? Hopefully his arm isn’t deStroyed like every other young Mets starter. The Mets are doing Matt Harvey bobblehead this weekend. They might as well hand out a commemorative poster showing our 5 young aces with three of them X’d out.

Bruce METS Disease Update: Jay Bruce hit a double in the second inning last night and promptly was pulled from the game with an injury. The Mets said he was removed for precautionary reasons with calf cramps. Six hours later his calf muscle was probably melting off the bone like a slow cooked pork shoulder.

Noodle Arm Grandy: Curtis Granderson made a nice throw to nail a runner at the plate to end the second inning. It was nice to see old noodle arm make a big play. It obviously came long before the game completely fell apart. But still nice.

Niese And The Deliberate Dump: Speaking of every single starting pitcher on the team getting injured at the same time, Jon Niese is getting season ending knee surgery on a torn meniscus. Conspiracy theory alert: I’m pretty sure Niese’s trade deadline physical showed that he had a hole in his damn knee when we traded Antonio Bastardo for him. That was a pure salary dump. The Mets didn’t want to pay Bastardo next season. He had been terrible so I’m not saying it was a bad move. Just that it was a calculated move.

Yo Propaganda: I wrote about the Yoenis Cespedes BS news from yesterday. The media pretended that he promised not to opt-out of his contract but it wasn’t true. The real Yo news from last night was 1) He explained that he was limping two days ago because of an existing heel injury that he’s battled for years. What?!? 2) He rolled his ankle during the game and seemed even more injured last night. Poor Yo. METS disease really attacks everyone. Just pay Yo and then watch as he goes on workmen’s compensation forever.

Loney Veto Time: James Loney went 0 for 4 last night. He’s mediocre in the field and at the plate. I’m ready to move on. Definitely stop hitting him towards the top of the order. 8th is the only acceptable place in the lineup. Or maybe just start Kelly Johnson.

The Catcher Plan: Travis d’Arnaud went 0 for 3. He been bad this year as well. My takeaway with d’Arnaud this season is we need a starting catcher in the offseason. The Mets should sign the best available catcher and make d’Arnaud the backup. It’s not just about his poor 2016 season. We already know Travis is Mr. Glass. His best hope to play in MLB is as a backup catcher.

Murph MVP Run: Daniel Murphy hit a grand slam last night. He’s still on pace for 30+ dingers and 120+ RBIs. Sandy Alderson blew it not keeping Murph, and I blew it not picking him in my fantasy league. Honestly he used to be a mediocre infielder with no power, horrendous glove, and no speed so it wouldn’t surprise me if he went undrafted. Not anymore!
